Summer isn't here yet and it's 98 degrees outside! As crazy as this weather is I know it's here to stay at least for a couple of months! So if you can't beat it then have fun. However, there are precautions to take in crazy HOT weather such as this. Here are a few tips!:

Drink plenty of fluids such as water and fruit juices to prevent dehydration -- be aware that alcohol can impair the body's sweat mechanism, as can fairly common medications such as antihistamines and diuretics

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes

Protect yourself from direct sunlight by staying in the shade or by wearing sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses

NEVER leave pets or young children in a car, even with the windows cracked

Check on elderly relatives or neighbors at least daily

Take it easy when outdoors. Athletes and people who work outdoors should, if possible, take short breaks if they feel fatigued. Schedule physical activity during the morning or evening when it is cooler

I know we all LOVE to hit the pools, beaches, and lakes. I know I do and I love to tan.BUT DON'T OVERDUE IT! I use tanning oil that has SPF. MY FAVORITE IS BANANA BOAT TANNING OIL WITH SPF 15!

Any products with SPF is great for protecting the skin against the sun's harmful rays in the summer and can also be used all year round. Tanning too much can cause skin cancer,in some cases, wrinkles, spots, etc. So take proper care of your skin so it can look healthy and fresh.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So on this edition of "SERIOUSLY?!?!?!?" I would like to talk about an article I read today on AOL.com that really got me very upset.I thought we lived in a country that congratulated its citizens on great heroic deeds. The following piece is from <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">www.huffingtonpost.com<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">:

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"The controversy in the case stems from a May 19, 2009, incident in which Parker and another young man burst into Reliable Discount Pharmacy in Oklahoma City. The men, armed and wearing ski masks, allegedly ordered two female employees working behind the counter to give them money and drugs. Instead, the two women ran to the back of the store.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The men then allegedly pointed their guns at Ersland. The pharmacist drew his own weapon, a small semiautomatic handgun he had in his pocket, and fired at Parker, striking the youth in the head. Surveillance <span style="color: black; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">video from inside the store captured Parker’s fall<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> to the ground as Ersland chased his accomplice from the store."
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
Mr. Ersland not only saved his life but the lives of 2 other women! And now he's in prison for defending his life against two criminals who were armed?! I'm a Criminal Justice major and I'll be the first to say THAT OUR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM SOME TIMES DOES NOT ACCOMPLISH WHAT IT IS SET OUT TO DO! It has it's faults and failures such as in this story where an innocent man is behind bars! If you want to support Jerome than log onto Facebook and go onto the page titled "Jerome Ersland Should Not Have Been Found Guilty" and support this man! THIS IS A GREAT INJUSTICE!

The President made the astonishing national televised accouncement Sunday night. Osama was killed by elite forces from the Navy SEAL called Team 6.Team 6 is an elite team made up of existing members of the Navy. The members picked are an elite group within the elite. Basically, the best of the best! They act outside of regular military protocol according to the actions that need to be taken. The members are not allowed to talk about the existence of Team 6.

The President said, "After a fire fight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body,” the president said. “No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties."

Osama was living in a mansion estimated to be worth $1 million. It was reportedly 8 times bigger than the surrounding homes. It had 12-18 foot walls surrounding the home topped with barb wires. The house had two security gates. Neighbors said that they really didn't think anything of this rare built because many people there were very religious and liked their privacy. What should have raised suspicion was the fact that they never put their trash out for collection; rather, they had their trash burnt.Smart move on their part I would say.

Osama was kiiled by a shot to the head. His home was raided by Team 6 and one of his sons, 2 couriers, and a woman were all killed in the process. Team 6 left any evidence of them being there erased. The operation was quick and quiet. Americans have been warned by officials that we should be prepared for a reaction attack by al-Qaeda. Obama said, "Americans understand the costs of war.Yet as a country, we will never tolerate our security being threatened, nor stand idly by when our people have been killed. We will be relentless in defense of our citizens and our friends and allies."

A range of emotions was felt all around the world when hearing of Osama's death. Yet, no other place had a more powerful reaction than New York City. After all the tears and pain that the families of the victims of 9/11 felt and are still feeling, hearing of Osama's death has brought some form of comfort and closure.
We don't have to be victims or silent victims! I read up on statistics of sexual assault and what I read really made me extremely upset. According to RAINN(Rape,Abuse,Incest National Network),

1 out of every 6 American women have been victims of an attempted or completed rape

17.7 MILLION American women have been victims of an attempted or completed rape

About 3 % of American men have experienced an attempted or completed rape

15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under the age of 12

29% of these children are between the ages of 12 and 17

Girls between the ages of 16 and 19 are more likely to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault

7% of girls are in grades 5-8

93% of the juvenile victims population knew their attacker

THE UNFORTUNATE REALITY IS THAT EVERY 2 MINUTES SOMEONE IN THE U.S. IS SEXUALLY ASSAULTED.

In these crimes, about 60% of rapes and other sexual assaults are never reported. So 15 out of 16 rapists will never serve one day in jail. Fear is the number one cause why victims will never report. They're afraid their attacker will come back and hurt them or someone in their families. Support for victims in these difficult times are extremely important.
If you or anyone you know have been victims of any forms of sexual assault then you can call
1.800.656.HOPE
Are they a sign of the world coming to a tragic end some time soon? As much as I would like to be up to date with all the news going on right now in the world, sometimes I just have to turn off my TV because it's too depressing! My heart goes out to all the countries going through some form of war or natural disaster such as Libya and Japan.
The people are now dealing with produce detected to have radiation and contaminated water. Everyone is now buying bottled water because they fear for their families' health. According to http://www.cnn.com/, the government of Fukushima Prefecture have told its residents to not eat leafy vegetables. Fukushima is one of Japan's top producers of fruits, vegetables, and rice. So it's a big blow for the farmers there to not be able to sell their crops to other cities. However, other cities are just being careful with food that is being imported from that section of Japan because of the possible radiation that can be carried in the produce. My heart really just goes out for all the victims who are going through this situation. No matter what your personal religions are this is a time for all of us to pray for Japan.
What's special about this steel angel? The steel used to make the angel is actual steel from the World Trade Center! "We just wanted to do something to kind of help them heal, let them know that we're going to try to support them through their grief," said Hennessey-Owen. Hennessey-Owen is the person who has personally created the angel sculptures for the three 9/11 crash sites. The angel sculpture being made for Christina will be placed at the James D. Kriegh Park in Oro Valley, Arizona, where little Christina played Little League baseball. I commend her family for being so strong through this whole ordeal.
YES, IM EXCITED TOO BECAUSE WE GET OUR 1 WEEK OF VACATION =) HOWEVER, FINAL WEEK EQUALS FINAL EXAMS WHICH EQUALS STRESS! So calm down & breathe! All you have to do is study! That's it. On the day of your exam EAT BREAKFAST so your body will have energy to burn and be alert for your exams. Have something sweet with you like candy so your body can run on some sugar. I stress too and this advice I give you I also use! The earthquake caused roads to shift, sidewalks to break, buildings to shake, and has shifted Japan 13 FEET CLOSER TO THE U.S.!The earthquake also caused for the earth's axis to be shifted 6.5 inches, shortening the day by 1.6 microseconds.
As of March 16, 2011, there is a total of 10,000 Japanese citizens missing, with the number increasing every day.
After watching videos and seeing pictures of when the tsunami hit and the aftermath it left behind, it just breaks my heart. It truly makes me sad just to think of the fear these people must have felt when they saw the big 30 feet waves coming at them. One day their lives were normal, the next they were left with nothing, no possessions, their homes are gone, they have loved ones missing....their lives will never be the same...Japan will never be the same.
President Obama has pledged to help Japan in any way possible. The White House said in a statement," The president briefed Prime Minister Kan on the additional support being provided by the U.S., including specialized military assets with expertise in nuclear response and consequence management". I'm glad that the U.S. is lending a hand in this time of crisis. Obama couldn't have said it any better when he said, " "Even if those allies are themselves economically advanced and powerful, there are moments where they need our help, and we're bound together by a common humanity".

There are so many ways you can help Japan in this time of need. It doesn't have to be anything big because of every little help counts. You can go online to http://www.worldvision.org/ and donate as little as $5 or as much as you want. Also visit http://www.unicefusa.org/ and help a child that has been affected by the disaster in Japan. You can also raise money for the relief efforts taking place right now. Like I said, every little counts especially when it comes from our hearts. When tragedy struck us on 9/11, the world connected together, mourned with us, and embraced us with love. Now it's our turn to return the love and unite for the victims of this horrifying disaster.

I hope the following pictures just bring compassion to your hearts like it did for mine.
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">March is Women's History Month! It's time to celebrate who we are in this world. We have to learn how to love ourselves, take care of ourselves, be proud of who we are, and above all stand strong as independent women. We are mothers, sisters, wives, aunts, and friends. The following is a poem by one of the best influential woman living in our age, Maya Angelou.

PHENOMENAL WOMAN

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> <span style="color: magenta; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I hope all the ladies reading this poem can take pride from being a woman. We are intelligent, beautiful, compassionate, strong-willed, independent goddesses. As such, we should behave properly with manners, never behaving as someone who we're not. Never try to fit in because we are unique. Never try to be superficial because beauty comes from within. Never settle for less because we're worth more than all the diamonds in the world. SO LADIES, BE PROUD OF BEING BEAUTIFUL WOMEN!

In his memoir Against All Odds, which was released today, he tells of his most horrible memories of his childhood which includes physical abuse at the hands of his mother's many husbands, sexual abuse at camp, stealing food so that he could eat, & many others. His mother recently came to know about his being sexually abused at camp by one of the camp counselors who Brown doesn't name. Everything he went through has made him into the great Senator that he is today. He wanted everyone to understand why he believe's so much in victims' rights and why he has voted the way he has voted. His book is definitely on my list of books to read. He is one of many inspirational leaders of our decade and I strongly recommend his book!
One of my favorite places has to be Cuban Pete's in Montclair. It's an amazing restaurant with great food, amazing service, and a wonderful environment. Any woman loves jewelry and any man loves sports. So,Guys, buy your girlfriends/wives a beautiful necklace and/or matching earrings. It will be greatly appreciated ! =) And,Ladies, buy your boyfriends/husbands sport tickets so they can attend their favorite games (NETS, NJ DEVILS,YANKEES,METS,GIANTS,JETS).YOU CAN NEVER GO WRONG WITH GAME TICKETS!

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT! IT'S REALLY NOT COMPLICATED AT ALL! BUT VALENTINE'S DAY SHOULDN'T BE ABOUT WHERE YOU GO OR WHAT YOU RECEIVE. IT SHOULD BE ABOUT CELEBRATING THE LOVE BOTH OF YOU HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO FIND IN EACH OTHER. APPRECIATE EVERY MOMENT YOU SPEND TOGETHER BECAUSE TIME IS THE ONLY THING YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO GET BACK. SO ENJOY YOURSELVES WHILE YOU'RE MAKING LIFETIME MEMORIES.

And to those of you who are single, don't hate this beautiful holiday just because you're not in a relationship. Just because this holiday is mainly targeted at couples does not mean you can't go out and enjoy yourselves! Treat yourselves! Go shopping, go see a movie, go eat out with your friends, go clubbing! There are endless possibilities. Don't just sit and mope around! Instead, be happy and take advantage of the situation.Display Namehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15695889302516494146noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724384836810498395.post-31197556346343620052011-02-03T17:03:00.000-05:002011-02-03T17:03:34.874-05:00NATIONAL CONDOM MONTH!GET PASSIONATE ABOUT PREVENTION!

According to my favorite site, http://www.brownielocks.com/, February is National Condom Month! James R. Allen, CEO and President of ASHA said,"Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain one of nation's biggest public health threats, and it is high time that we as a nation get serious, get passionate about addressing the problem". I could not agree more with this statement. Teens are becoming more and more sexual at a young age. Yet, at their young age they are not aware of the various forms of STDs.This is expected since many parents and schools choose to ignore the problem rather than to sit down and explain various forms of contraception to their children. However, I don't think college students have any excuse when it comes to not using contraception. Here are a few facts about the consequences of choosing to have relations with various partners with no condoms:

Every year there are ,approximately, 15 million new cases of STDs! That's an extremely high number!

In the U.S., 65 MILLION people are living with a chronic STD such as herpes or HPV!!

In most STD cases, 2/3 of the victims are under the age of 25

1 in 4 new STD infections occur in teenagers

About 15% of American infertile women are infertile due to an untreated STD

It cost more than $8 BILLION to treat and diagnose STDs

Who wants to live a life with the consequences of a STD that could have been prevented by using a condom? It's not a hard decision.Being "caught up in the moment" can have devastating consequences. Don't let your partner influence you into not using condoms! GET PASSIONATE ABOUT PREVENTION!
Now,here's a story that really touched my heart and grabbed my attention. Little Anabelle Whitehouse is a 5 year old girl with a rare genetic disorder called icthyosis. Only 1 out of 200,000 or 300,000 Americans live with icthyosis. This rare disease causes Anabelle's body to literally shed its skin every day. Her parents have to rub a full-body exfoliating lotion on Anabelle every half an hour so her skin won't turn into hard, thick scales; and she has wear bandages various times a day. Thankfully, her disorder does not effect her life expectancy. She lives her life like any 5 year old little girl should.
I always hear about how people want to travel to Third World countries and assist in helping out victims of poverty. While there is nothing wrong with that, America also has places where poverty persists. Right here in Newark I see many homeless people make a long line for the soup kitchen every Saturday. It breaks my heart when I see mothers with their children in the cold waiting to just have something to eat. We should be able to reach out and lend a hand to those less fortunate than us. There are many volunteering programs that one can find online. Remember to always lend a hand to those in need.

On another note, I have the mose hated word of the week! SNOW! I think I talk on behalf of every Jersey resident when I say THIS IS JUST CRAZY! I love the snow but it's been snowing so much there are piles of snow everywhere! Some piles have to be about 6 feet tall! From all the years of living in Jersey, this is the most craziest winter yet. So when you're driving or walking, be careful. The roads and sidewalks are very slippery. Don't run or drive too fast. Our safety comes first before anything.

So by now, everyone is on their 4th week of this winter quarter which can only mean one thing: midterms are just around the corner! I can feel the stress in the air =) BREATHE & RELAX! Start studying early and start on those papers so that when midterm week is here, the work won't be piled on. Procrastination is number one factor of stress for college students. I know because I've been there. Developing good study habits can helps us so much. If you need help, ask the professor or another fellow student. There's nothing wrong with asking for help!

SO HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND & BE SAFE!Display Namehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15695889302516494146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724384836810498395.post-17878756401694563032011-01-13T21:16:00.000-05:002011-01-13T21:16:39.081-05:00SNOW+EVENTS!

Hi Everyone!
I hope everyone is having a great quarter so far! I'm getting tons of homework and quizzes already and it's just week 2! I hope everyone is getting to school safely with all this snow Jersey has received lately. It just keeps piling on! Personally, for me,it's hard to take public transportation with all this now because there's a lot of sidewalks that aren't shoveled yet. There's just too much ice everywhere. So please, while your driving, be alert and drive slower than usual! If you're walking, you can easily spot the ice on the ground so try to avoid stepping on it but if you can't avoid it,then step on it lightly.

On a much more serious note,by this time I know everyone has heard of the Arizona shootings and the lives of the victims that were taken, including a 9 year old girl, Christina Taylor Green.

Even at her tender age, Christina had already taken on a political role. She had just been elected onto the student council of her school and wanted to attend Penn State so that she could receive an education and assist those less fortunate than herself. She came from a well known family. Her grandfather was Dallas Green, a former major-league pitcher;and her father was John Green, a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers. She was thankful for everything she had so she knew she wanted to help others. In a twist of fate, her life ended in a tragic way but also began on a tragic day.She was born on September 11,2001. To her parents, she was a perfect angel and, now, after death, she is their angel.

CAMPUS EVENTS:
Now that you know,I hope you guys would take advantage of the NJ Transit discount because I know many students take public transportation and buying bus and light rail passes every month can make a hole in our wallets. So think smart & act quickly!

WISHING EVERYONE SO MUCH LUCK FOR THIS QUARTER! I HOPE IT STARTED OFF GREAT AND I HOPE IT ENDS THE SAME WAY!Display Namehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15695889302516494146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724384836810498395.post-8901032795974100752011-01-04T16:41:00.000-05:002011-01-04T16:41:57.140-05:00A New Quarter,A New BeginningSo today was the first official beginning of all classes at Berkeley College.I can't speak for everyone else, but I'm definitely happy to be back in class where I can put my mind to good use. It's always good to see new students and it's always a pleasure to see my fellow classmates who have been with me since I started in the fall of 2008(yes,it'll be 3 years since I started at BC).Since I am realizing that I will hopefully be graduating next year, I'm starting to reflect more on what kind of career will make me happy and useful to my community. I think that's the same for everyone else graduating next year with me.However, for now, I'm enjoying the time I have with my friends at school and focusing on my studies.

Now,I just want to fill in everyone on the activities that will be going on on campus. The following are the fliers for those activities. So I hope everyone gets involved especially in the blood drive and the "God's Love We Deliver"programs. I know many people are AFRAID of needles but it's for a very AMAZING cause! I have been donating blood since I have started at BC,unfortunately I can't at the moment, but If I had the chance I wouldn't think twice about possibly saving someone's life.SO PLEASE SIGN UP TO DONATE & SAVE A LIFE!

As this new quarter is beginning, I hope everyone is determined to keep their grades up and to try to attend every class possible.I understand incidents may come up where we won't be able to make it to class, but please attend the ones you can. Many professors deduct points from your overall grade which gives you a grade less than you should have attained. Same goes for all the homework.HOMEWORK IS VERY IMPORTANT TO YOUR FINAL GRADE! If there are things you don't understand, don't hesitate to ask the professor because that's exactly what they are there for. They don't expect us to understand everything.IT'S OK TO ASK QUESTIONS WHEN YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND.

Keep track of all the homework assignments and their due dates.Remember to study for all quizzes and exams( these are the most important ones)! If you need help studying, get together with another fellow student or friend who understands the topic better than you do.Try not to stress about assignments and exams.I stress but when I do, I try different methods. For example:

take a break!

go walk outside for a little bit

get something to drink

eat a candy or anything with sugar so you will have energy

take a nap

meditate

try yoga

WELL,I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT QUARTER! STUDY HARD,HAVE FUN,MAKE MEMORIES.LOVE YOU GUYS!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I can't believe Christmas has come and gone! All the Christmas shopping, crowded malls, rude people,no parking spaces, maxed out credit cards....it's all done with, for this year at least. I,personally, had a great time with my family and boyfriend. There wasn't one thing that we didn't laugh at. We made memories. The most important thing to do with your family is to make memories that will last us all our lives. Treasure the moments that you have with your loved ones because we never know what the future will bring. With that said, I will like to take a moment and write about someone who was and still is very important to me,but isn't physically with me here on this earth: my brother,Jacob(or how I liked to call him,JayJay).

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">He passed away 5 years ago at the age of 21 in a terrible and fatal car accident.I was blessed to have had him in my life for 15 years. He was my father figure. Now that he is gone...I miss his smile, the way he laughed, the way he joked around with me.The last happy memory I will always keep with me was when we were outside. My stepdad and he were playing basketball, and I just remember JayJay laughing, just having a good time. I choose to embrace his life rather than his death.I still find myself crying myself to sleep at nights because I miss him so much, but I know he is in a much better place watching over his sisters.I LOVE YOU JAYJAY & THERE'S NOT A DAY THAT PASSES BY THAT I DO NOT THINK ABOUT YOU,ESPECIALLY AROUND THE HOLIDAYS.

On a more happy note, 2011 IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, TWO DAYS AWAY TO BE EXACT! Time to look back and reflect on 2010.Always learn to be thankful for the good and the bad in our lives. The good things make our lives more joyful and the bad things make us who we truly are on the inside. Both are important ingredients in making us and our every day lives unique in every way. So I'll be the first one to say the things that I am very grateful for:

I love school. It's no secret that I love going to school. Some people may call me a geek =] but I don't care. I believe education is very important in order to get ahead in life. So to all my fellow Berkeley College students: STAY IN SCHOOL! ALL THIS HOMEWORK AND STUDYING will pay off!

I'm grateful for my friends that I have made while I have been at Berkeley College. They have made my college experience so much more worthwhile! I love you guys!

I'm beyond grateful for my family and boyfriend. They have give me non-stop support and encouragement in everything I have done.I couldn't have been blessed with a better family.

Now, I want to hear what you guys are thankful for!

!!!!NEW YEARS RESOLUTION!!!!!

DO BETTER IN SCHOOL =D

Lose weight so my health can be better

Learn to drive(yes I don't know how to drive, personal reasons)

I can't wait to start the new year fresh! I'm staying positive for the new year! I choose not to surround myself with negativity and I hope you guys don't either! I can't wait to hear what your New Year resolutions are!

I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND BERKELEY COLLEGE STUDENTS THAT CLASSES WILL RESUME JANUARY 3, 2011. I HOPE YOU GUYS DO WELL THIS QUARTER!
I can remember being so excited as Christmas day got closer. When you're a child, I think opening the gifts Christmas morning is what gets them more excited than anything else in the world;but as one gets older, Christmas represents so much more than just gifts. Christmas is a time we spent with relatives, talking about things that happened throughout the year, reminiscing about the past, planning the future, and being thankful for the present.
During this Christmas season, we should think more about others than ourselves. There are many people out there who do not have the luxuries that we have, men and women who will pass their Christmas morning in a shelter or sleeping on a sidewalk, children whose parents do not have the money to spend on buying them one toy. There are many places one can volunteer to help out the less fortunate. Go to http://www.volunteernewjersey.org/vnj/ to look for different volunteering opportunities. During this season, please always remember the saying, IT IS BETTER TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE.
Since the holiday parties are coming up, I cannot emphasize how important it is to not TEXT,DRINK,& DRIVE! December is NATIONAL DRUNK AND DRUGGED DRIVING PREVENTION MONTH! There are many things you can do to prevent someone from driving after a person has been drinking. If you see someone at a holiday party who obviously has had one too many drinks, check if they are at the party with someone else, if they are let the other person know to not let the person drinking to drive. If they are at the party alone, volunteer to drive them or call a taxi to take them home.DO NOT LET THEM GET BEHIND THE WHEEL! You do not want to be responsible for a person losing their life when you could have done something to prevent it. Holidays are meant for us to have a great time but not at the expense of one of us losing our life. HAVE FUN,BE SAFE, & DON'T DRINK & DRIVE!

Finally, there are a few people I want to give SHOUT OUTS to! People who have made a difference in my life & I'm just so extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to have met them.

First off, my boyfriend, Jorge. He has been incredible source of strength for me throughout this year. There are just no words to express how wonderful this man is to me. I met him a little over a year ago and he's here to stay =) I LOVE YOU and thank you for just being you and loving me unconditionally!

Secondly, my best friends(aka twin),Evie & Ruben. I met Evie in my first criminal justice class at Berkeley and we have been friends ever since. There are so many things her and I can laugh about for hours. Ruben has been like a brother to me.He always knows how to give good advice at the moments when I needed it the most. BERKELEY WOULD NOT BE THE SAME WITHOUT THESE TWO....I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE SAME WITHOUT THEM.

Finally, to the rest of my friends whom I have met at Berkeley: Lilly,Dale, Damon, Carol, & Michelle. You guys make my life so much easier with your funny stories and "blonde" moments! I know I can turn to every one of you with any problem. I love you guys and no matter where life takes us, I can just hope we stay friends for a lifetime.

SOOOOOOOOOOO HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE! Elizabeth Edwards, who was born Mary Elizabeth Anania, was such an inspiration to so many women living with breast cancer. Throughout the six years she had been battling this sickness, she never gave up hope. I'm truly saddened by her passing. When I would see her on TV doing different interviews, every time she would speak about her cancer, not one time did I see her cry or try to create pity for herself. She always held herself in such a graceful and dignified manner. However, her life doesn't begin with her battle with cancer.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">She was born in Jacksonville, Florida on July 3rd of 1949. Being the daughter of a United States Navy pilot was never easy on her because she went from military base to military base. For most of her childhood, she lived in Japan while her father was stationed there. According to Elizabeth, the hardest part for her was having to move during her senior year of high school. She went on to graduate, then attended an university where she received her Bachelor's Degree. After 3 years of postgraduate studies in English, she went on to attend law school and earned her Juris Doctor.

Law school was where she met the man who would become her husband, John Edwards, and were married July 30, 1977. Elizabeth was blessed to become the mother for four children: Wade(who died at the age of 16 during a freak storm), Cate, Emma Claire, and Jack. She was not only a mother but also a Democratic political figure.

On November 3,2004, Elizabeth was diagnosed with breast cancer. She became an activist for cancer patients and for women's health. She became their image of hope, although their was no hope for her. Even through this dificult time for her, she had to handle her husband's infidelity and his fathering a child with his mistress. She held her composure as the graceful lady that she was and only continued with what was truly important in her life at the moment, her children and her battle against cancer.

Unfortunately, on December 6,2010, the Edwards announced that Elizabeth would stop all treatment after her doctors said that any further treatment would just be unproductive. She posted her last Facebook status as the following:

<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">" You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that. And, yes, there are certainly times when we aren't able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human.
<span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful. It isn't possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day. To you I simply say: you know"
Now, December just arrived, hand in hand with a great cause.Today is World AIDS Day! I know that a lot of people don't know much about AIDS or HIV.All some people think they know is that you can possibly die from it. Ok,well, that's not even half of it!

One BIG thing I want to point out and make VERY CLEAR is that AIDS and HIV are NOT the same thing! According to http://www.worldaidsday.org/, when a person is known to have HIV, that means they just have the virus in their body. A person is considered to have AIDS when their body has become too weak to fight off any little diseases. MANY PEOPLE are confused as to how HIV can be passed on.IT CAN'T BE PASSED ON JUST BECAUSE YOU TALK TO SOMEONE WHO HAS OR BECAUSE YOU'RE NEAR THEM! THIS IS PLAIN IGNORANCE! Some of the REAL ways that a person can contract HIV are :

having sex without a condom with someone who has HIV

sharing dirty, infected needles, syringes, etc. with someone who has HIV

can be passed from a mother who has HIV to her baby during the pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding. If the mother is taking precautions, then passing the HIV can be greatly reduced

Unfortunately, there is no cure for HIV,but there are treatments that can help keep it under control. If you think you can have HIV,then PLEASE get tested! You can call 1-800-CDC-INFO;you can also log onto http://www.hivtest.org/ and find places near you where you can get tested. The earlier you know, the earlier you can start treatment, and the better chance you have of keeping it under control.

I was reading some interesting facts about HIV:

One in 20 gay men in the UK is living with HIV

The most common treatment today for someone diagnosed with HIV early is one pill, once or twice a day

With the right medical help, the vast majority (approximately 99 per cent) of HIV positive women can give birth to healthy uninfected babies

PLEASE DO NOT DISCRIMINATE AGAINST ANYONE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS! THEY'RE PEOPLE JUST LIKE THE REST OF US WHO ARE BATTLING FOR THEIR LIVES. DON'T BE IGNORANT ABOUT HIV/AIDS.EDUCATE YOURSELVES SO THAT YOU WILL NOT BECOME A STATISTIC.IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO MIGHT HAVE HIV, PLEASE HELP THEM UNDERSTAND THAT THEY NEED TO GET CHECKED ASAP.HIV/AIDS IS NOT A DEATH SENTENCE.IT'S JUST ANOTHER BATTLE IN THIS JOURNEY OF LIFE THAT CAN BE OVERCOME WITH THE SUPPORT OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS.Display Namehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15695889302516494146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724384836810498395.post-4254062103173953022010-11-18T23:23:00.000-05:002010-11-18T23:23:48.453-05:00Relationships... Complicated or Easy??

Relationships can be anything BUT easy! Anyone who has been in a relationship long enough know that it can be compared to being on a rollacoaster ride,so many twists and turns.Relationships teach us lessons that we need to be taught, including ones that leave scars for life.We have to take the good and the bad as it comes. If we don't, than our lives will be just one miserable experience and I,for one, REFUSE to let any experience mishape the good person that I am and that includes relationships.

So here's my story....
I started dating when I was 17 years young.Like any teenager in high school,I had this fairy tale in my mind about marrying the first guy I fell in love with.Well,I met the guy who later became my first boyfriend,my first long distance relationship,my first love.He lived in Chicago and I lived in Newark. At the time, distance wasn't that big of an issue because when you're in love, anything goes. Everything,to me,seemed perfect. But I should have listened to my ex best friend who kept telling me I shouldn't be naive and just think my bf at the time was being faithful;but since i was completely innocent and I loved my bf, I didn't even harbor the idea of him being unfaithful to me.Two years later, I found out everything he was doing behind my back and I broke up with him. That was my first heart break. He made me feel insecure about myself.I felt like no other person could love me the way he did......
But here I am, alive and in love again with a MAN who would give me the world if he could. He's taught me how to value myself and gave me confidence to do better for myself.
Never let anyone define the person that you are on the inside. LADIES,don't let any man make you doubt yourself! MEN, don't let any woman make you feel like you're not good enough! Heartbreaks just serve us better to remind us that we're all human and that we all feel pain, but we can take this pain and turn it into something positive for ourselves.Don't date anyone who is not willing to make you a priority, who makes you cry, who makes you feel insecure about the way you look, who is talking to 20 other ladies or guys beside yourself, who has no intention of getting serious with you, who rather text in front of you when you're speaking, who has NO respect for you, and these are just a few. As my best friend told me, relationships can be compared to having a baby: it must be cherished and attended to so that it can grow stronger every day.
The following are two of my favorite quotes about relationships:
"A relationship is like a rose. How long it lasts, no one knows. Love can erase an awful past, love can be yours, you'll see at last. To feel that love, it makes you sigh. To have it leave, you'd rather die. You hope you've found that special rose, cause you love and care for the one you choose." - Rob Cella

"Don't rush into any kind of relationship. Work on yourself. Feel yourself, experience yourself and love yourself. Do this first and you will soon attract that special loving other." - Russ Von Hoelscher
There are thousands of people dealing with diabetes in the U.S. alone. It effects everyone, including children. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Some symptoms for Type 1 diabetes include extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, extreme fatigue and irritability, among others. People who suffer from Type 2 diabetes usually have no symptoms but some signs they should recognize are frequent infections, blurred visions, tingling or numbess in the hands and/or feet, etc. I can't imagine how it is having to prick my fingers every day, take different medications, or be careful with my diet. There are different ways to prevent developing diabetes such as staying physically active, keeping a healthy diet, maintaing a healthy weight, among other things. We all can be part of the cure! Life is difficult enough as it is, so why let diabetes ruin the little peace we have? I myself have relatives and friends who suffer from diabetes and I have seen their struggle first hand. I'm amazed at how strong and determined they are to win this fight. BE PART OF THE CURE!
All 68 people on board were killed in what is being called "Cuba's worst plane crash since 1989". On board the plane were 40 Cubans and 28 foreigners. In the foreigners group were included seven Mexicans, nine Argentines, three Dutch citizens, two Austrians, two Germans, a Spaniard,an Italian,a Frenchman, a Japanese citizen, and a Venezuelan. I believe when tragedy such as this occurs where various nationalities are included, the whole world comes together to mourn for the victims and to give emotional support to their loved ones.

Secondly, I think I'm not the only one who is shocked that it is November already! Where has the time gone? I wanted to find what were some November monthly observances so I came across this website with some crazy, silly, and unknown observances for every month of the year: http://www.brownielocks.com/. So there were many observances for November but the two that I picked are the (1)Military Family Appreciation month and the (2)National Inspirational Role Models month. Don't forget to show your support for families who have loved ones overseas! I believe everyone should have a positive role model whether it be a singer, politician,or author.

!!!!SHOUT OUT TIME!!!!
Well I will be the first to admit that I love this holiday just because it's simply so much fun! All the costumes, endless candy, spooky stories, horror movies shown on almost every tv channel, the just-for-fun scary attractions, and real haunted places! I believe in the paranormal because I know there's more to life than what we perceive with our own two eyes.I see almost every and any show having to do with the paranormal such as Ghost Adventures and Ghost Hunters. However, I also love visiting spooky scary attractions this time of the year! So, why not combine both and have the best of both worlds?

The following is just 4 of about 30 plus more
most haunted places in New Jersey that I recommend you visit....if you dare:

(1) Atco Ghost: In the southern NJ town of Atco, the story goes that a young boy was killed while trying to chase after his basketball to the middle of the street. There are specific rules you have to follow if you want to see the spirit of this boy, but when you do, you'll never go back.

(2)Ringwood Manor: Robert Erskine,a Revolutionary War hero, was buried on his property but the weird thing is that the bricks of his crypt don't stay in place and keep falling out as if he were digging his way out.On his crypt there has been seen a blue light just floating there.

(3)Montclair State creepy happenings: The Clove Road Apartments on campus are said to have been built on an ancient Native American burial ground. As one can imagine, any place built on one of these can turn up severe paranormal activity.Safe to say,the previous student who used to live there, till this day, cannot speak of what they have experienced.Would you?

(4)Glenn Wershing's haunted house: Mr. Wershing is an archeologist who runs the local historical society in Huntsberg section of Sussex County. His house has been haunted for years with weird noises, invisible footsteps following right behind them, things disappearing and reappearing, etc. Yet, the Wershings aren't going anywhere.

Ok, so there you have it! That's just a little taste of what scary Jersey has to offer. Now, for the fun spooky attractions! Don't forget to visit the following attractions:

Eastern State Penitentiary "Terror Behind the Walls";located in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. http://www.easternstate.org/halloween

Headless Horseman Hayride;Ulster Park,NY.http://www.headlesshorseman.com/

State Scare Factory;Belleville,NJ.http://www.statescare.com/

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYBODY!Display Namehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15695889302516494146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724384836810498395.post-82293193524131937742010-10-19T23:11:00.000-04:002010-10-19T23:11:53.331-04:00Domestic Violence Awareness Month!<span style="color: purple; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As many people know or don't know, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I want everyone to know that DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS NOT O.K.! I know that almost everyone knows someone who has been through domestic violence or is currently in a violent relationship.Assaulting your partner should never be used in place of using words to communicate!

<span style="background-color: white; color: purple; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I was reading some alarming statistics concerning domestic violence that left me very concerned. According to the American Bar Association, "Approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the United States; in 2000, 1,247 women and 440 men were killed by an intimate partner;in recent years, an intimate partner killed approximately 33% of female victims and 4% of male murder victims".

Abusing your partner or him/her abusing you is not ok.Abusing includes:

hitting you

spitting on you

kicking you

punching you

pushing you

calling you mean offensive words

making you feel insecure about yourself

trying to isolate you from family and friends

These are only some of so many different kinds of physical and psychological abuse.LOVE DOES NOT CAUSE PAIN,IT DOES NOT HIT YOU,IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU FEEL WORTHLESS! If you need someone to talk to and you feel like you can't talk to friends or family, please go see your counselor at your campus.Newark Campus counselor is Amanda Frey and she will not judge you but she will listen.

NJ Domestic Violence Hotline is 800-572-SAFE(7233)
